MADRASSA EDUCATION SYSTEM IN ASSAM

The word ‘MADRASSA’ is an Arabic term. Its meaning is educational institution or school imparting education to students. The Madrassa system of education is not an isolation one but it is supplementing the mainstream educational pattern. From the time immemorial the Madrassas are discharging social obligation towards the nation as a whole. They are providing access to elementary education for the most deprived people, most of whom live in rural areas, where avenues and opportunities are limited. Most of this Madrassas are in such areas where there were few or no schools, where community came forward recognizing the importance of education and created access for students, majority of whom are first generation learners. These Madrassas have successfully synthesized the religio-cultural needs of the Muslim community along with modern concepts in education and thus ensure enrolment and participation of the common citizen of the country.

In the initial stage, the Board followed the Nizamia courses and curriculam followed by the Calcutta Alia Madrassa. Subsequently ,in 1967, the Board modified the cources and curriculam and included the secular subjects like English, MIL (Assamese/Bengali), Hindi, Mathematics, Social Science and General Science at the time of re-organized Madrassa cources and curriculam as per Secondary level of General education in addition to the theological subjects like Quran, Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Usul, Aquaid, Tarikh(Islamic History) etc. alongwith languages like Arabic, Urdu and Persian upto Fazil(degree) level. As such the Gauhati University,Dibrugarh University and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council have accorded equivalency of HSLC to the Fazil Degree. After Fazil Degree the students can get themselves admitted into the Higher Secondary Level under the Council in any stream as per their talent and choice.
